SALT and FRESH WATER as well as DEEP SEA AND UNDERWATER FISHING
Sports fishing in Peru can be divided into three categories: Salt-water fishing, fresh-water fishing and underwater fishing. The first is practiced all along our extensive coast. People like to fish either from the beach, from rocks or from a boat. Coastal fishing is very popular and species like flounder, corvina and "chita" (Anisotremus scalpularis) are coveted in the sandy beaches of the central south coast. In the north, the favorite catch is sea bass and pompano. Fishing from rocky places is also done all along the coast. The catch here can be "chita", "cabrilla", "cherlo", "tramboyo", and "pintadilla" (Cheilodactylus variegatus).
Boat fishing has two variations: "Still boat" and "trawling"(from a moving boat). In general, in the central and south coast the catch is the same as in rocky places while conger eel, "mero" (Alphestes afer) and dogfish can be added to the list in the north coast. |

Trawling, on the other hand, is mainly done in the north coast and its most frequent catch is tuna, "cherelas", "agujillas", "sierras", "pericos" and marlins.
The Peruvian littoral on the shores of the Pacific Ocean has two marine currents: the "Niño", of warm waters from the north, and the Humboldt, of cold waters from the south.
Fresh-water fishing or continental fishing has two modes: Fishing done in sierra rivers and lakes and in jungle rivers and lakes. In the sierra or highland there are two species, which were introduced in Peru in the last century: trout and atherine, which is a variety of mackerel. These are common in clean and well-oxygenated water. Trout (white and rainbow trout) is found at more than 2,500 m.a.s.l. Fishing in the jungle is less developed than in the coast and is mostly done in just a few lakes and rivers of the northern Amazon, especially in Iquitos. Some of the favorite species are "tucunare", "gamitana" and "araguana". In certain regions of the south (Puerto Maldonado) it is frequent to find "zúngaros", "doncellas" and "pacos".
These currents cause an abundance of plankton, which promotes ichthyological life, and thus make our sea an ideal paradise for underwater fishing.
An enormous variety of species favored by sportsmen will ensure great fishing.
